Weight Loss and our DNA

Our hunter-gathering ancestors didn't have it so easy; their only meals came from the animals they killed and the plants they found or cultivated themselves. For them, starvation was more of a risk than obesity.Over time, the human body evolved to store food as fat for the future.

You inherited that same programming in your DNA. It is called your metabolism:
It's the series of chemical reactions that control your weight. When those reactions are out of balance, you'll gain weight - even when you think you're doing everything right to lose it. Have you ever really looked at what you put in your mouth?

If your like most consumers, your hunting and gathering probably involves foraging in your fridge or picking out packages at the supermarket. Now, take a closer look at the labels on those packages: You'll see many words you probably can't define or even pronounce. These aren't foods found in nature. I can guarantee that your ancestors never hunted for "hydrogenated" anything. They probably wouldn't recognize most of the food you eat.

Here's the news flash: Your DNA doesn't recognize these foods either. Frankly, it doesn't know how to process them.

Healthy food choices

There are actually a lot of food items that can help you satisfy your hunger, get you energized and nourished without wreaking havoc on your weight loss program.

• Whole grains – snacks made of whole grain are rich in fiber and complex carbohydrates. These can give you the energy that you need to get through the day. Go for low-fat whole-grain crackers, pretzels or cripsbreads and make sure to have some available in your work area so you can easily grab a bite when you feel hungry.
• Fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables make you feel full without the fat intake. They are generally low-calorie choices so you don't have to worry about your weight.
• Nuts. If you tend to feel sleepy at work, nuts and seeds can give you the extra energy to get through the day. They are rich in protein so they tend to make you feel full for a longer period.

So the next time you feel the urge to snack, you can stop feeling guilty about it and satisfy your hunger with these food items.
