Your brain needs glucose.....

On a starved state, the body tends to go on a hunt for stored fuel to keep your energy level up. Your brain needs glucose for it to regulate various processes. If you don't eat, your brain doesn't get its regular supply so it goes searching for fuel in your system and will resort to either using your stored carbohydrates or converting your fat stores into glucose. By the time lunch comes, you're so starved that your brain sends off the warning signals to refuel as much as you can stuff into your system. Because of this, you have a higher tendency to take in large portions of food and go on a binge to compensate for the lost energy. It is that or you strengthen the impulse to reach for a mid-morning snack – which mostly consists of high-fat sweets, which can wreak havoc on your weight loss program.

Lose Weight By Eating Your Breakfast

Weight-watchers, be warned. Skipping meals to lose weight is bound to backfire on you. When you don't eat breakfast, you are more prone to overeating and this translates to taking in more calories than you really need. Take note that it has been at least eight hours since your last meal. On the average, an individual will grow hungry every four hours. Even while you're asleep, you're using energy, which means your body is already in a starved state by morning. If you don't eat anything to start your day and opt to get lunch instead, you're practically forcing your body to run on empty. That's more than sixteen hours of food deprivation.

Understanding MS

Multiple Sclerosis is actually an autoimmune disease that primarily affects the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord). Due to triggers that are yet unknown, the immune system of the body (which is responsible for fighting off illnesses) begins to turn on the body itself. The body’s myelin sheath - which is actually the covering of the nerve cells – is attacked. Because of this anomaly, demylelination occurs. This refers to the inflammation and gradual breaking down of the myelin sheaths. Since healthy myelin sheaths are necessary for the efficient transmission of messages from the brain to the body, the MS patient's movement and reception of sensations are greatly affected, limiting normalcy of life.

Even though a cure to MS is yet to be found, there are available therapy programs and medications that can help patients resume a somewhat normal life and to slow down the progress of the disease. Institutions like the National MS Foundation seek to fund the developments of these programs and medications and to raise more awareness about MS.

My personal story

When my brother Brian was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 20 years ago, my first reaction was anger. It felt like an unfair blow, random and uncaring. Bitterly, I thought, “Why him? Why not those people who voluntarily throw their lives away. My brother had always taken care of his health, and he was the best brother, husband, father and friend anybody could ask for.

He always had a smile on his face and can be counted on to have something funny and inspiring to say even in the toughest times. When a person develops a serious life-altering disease like MS, his entire family's life is changed forever. We painfully resigned ourselves to the reality that my brother, who was so vibrant and full of life, would eventually be confined to a wheelchair like a paraplegic. Friends and other loved ones shook their heads in sympathy. Strangely, it was Brian who seemed to handle the diagnosis better. Until now, 20 years later, my brother still manages to have a sense of humour and amazing strength about the whole ordeal. For him, MS can only ravage his body but it will never touch his spirit.
